Photographing the Dance of the Planets
The naked eye planets can be photographed easily (along with bright stars) with a camera on a tripod--no telescope is needed!
You need a camera that can be set for exposures of 20 sec or so. (Many snapshot cameras can’t be programmed to do this.) Use film with an ASA rating of about 400 or higher, with lens apertures larger than f/4 or so. (I use f/2 or f/2.8 with a 55 mm lens, and f/4 with my 28 mm lens.)
Photograph a planet (or planets) on successive nights to make a mosaic of images showing its movement across the sky.
